Brown Statement on State of the Union

February 24, 2026

Washington, DC – Congresswoman Shontel Brown (OH-11) releases the following statement in response to Trump’s State of the Union Address:

“Tonight’s State of the Union was exactly what many Americans dreaded: a speech filled with distortions, political smears, and a version of reality that simply does not match what families are living every day. Instead of accountability, we heard deflection. Instead of honesty, we heard lies. And instead of a plan to bring people together, we saw more division.

“I’m disappointed, but I can’t say I’m surprised. That’s exactly why I chose not to attend.

“Instead, I spent the evening with Clevelanders, because I wanted to hear the real state of our union. And what I heard was clear: costs are up, life feels more and more unaffordable, and benefit cuts are making it worse. Small business owners are being squeezed by reckless tariffs. Community leaders are bracing for more funding cuts. And people are scared — scared of aggressive immigration actions, scared their basic rights are being chipped away, and scared about where this country is headed.

“I didn’t need to sit in that chamber to understand what’s at stake. I hear it every day from the people I represent — and I’ll keep fighting to make sure their voices are the ones that matter.”
