Brown Statement on House Resolution on Charlie Kirk

Washington, DC – Congresswoman Shontel Brown (OH-11) releases the following statement:
“I will continue to condemn the assassination of Charlie Kirk in the strongest possible terms, call upon all Americans to reject political violence in all its forms, and extend my deepest condolences to Charlie Kirk’s family as they mourn his tragic loss.
“As a Black woman representing a district that is home to people of every background, including Black and brown Americans, immigrants, the Jewish community, LGBTQ+ individuals, Muslims, and so many others, I cannot ignore that Mr. Kirk’s record was filled with rhetoric that disparaged and demeaned people like my constituents and people like me. That reality makes it deeply misleading for the House resolution to claim that he ‘worked tirelessly to promote unity’ or that his advocacy represented ‘respectful, civil discourse.’ Those words do not reflect the lived experiences of my community.
“Instead of bringing an honest, straightforward resolution to the floor that condemned this horrific act of political violence without distorting Mr. Kirk’s words and actions, House Republican leadership put forward a whitewashed account that ignores the divisive insults he directed at my constituents. Or worse, this resolution considers that rhetoric ‘respectful’ – it was not.
“I am proud to cosponsor Congressman Veasey’s resolution condemning the assassination of Charlie Kirk and all acts of political violence in this country. I remain committed to standing firmly against political violence in all its forms, and I urge all my colleagues to do the same, while also speaking truthfully about the divisions we must still work to heal.”
