Congresswoman Brown Applauds WNBA Return to Cleveland

June 30, 2025

Cleveland, OH – Today, the WNBA announced that Cleveland has been awarded the league’s 16th franchise, beginning play in 2028.

Earlier this year, Congresswoman Shontel Brown (OH-11) wrote WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert in support of Cleveland’s bid, underscoring how an expansion team would catalyze the city’s ongoing investments in development, entertainment, and equitable economic growth.

Congresswoman Brown releases the following statement:

“I am thrilled to welcome the WNBA back to Cleveland. This is a huge win for our community, our economy, and our downtown. Cleveland’s status as a great sports city is unquestioned, and as the 2024 Women’s NCAA Final Four demonstrated, Northeast Ohio can show up and show out for women’s basketball.

“Congratulations to everyone who helped bring WNBA back to Cleveland – victories like this don’t happen without everyone working together. My office was proud to support this effort, because bringing the WNBA back is a way to create more jobs, attract more visitors, and build a more inclusive sports scene. I can’t wait to cheer on our team when they hit the hardwood.”
