Congresswoman Brown Blasts Trump’s Illegal Federal Freeze

January 28, 2025

Washington, DC – Congresswoman Shontel Brown (OH-11) releases the following statement on the Trump Administration’s freeze on federal grants:

“President Trump’s effort to choke off nearly all federal funding is lawless, reckless, and clearly unconstitutional. The Constitution is clear: Congress holds the power of the purse, not the President.

“Freezing funding appropriated by Congress is not only a clear violation of the law, but it would also have a devastating impact on Northeast Ohio families, businesses, and schools. This is an illegal attempt to play games with people’s health care, housing, grocery bills and more. And it will raise costs for working class families in Northeast Ohio by cutting off services and assistance that people need.

“I will fight this action at every turn until President Trump reverses course and implements federal spending as intended and dictated by Congress.”

Today, Congresswoman Brown also joined colleagues in writing to the White House requesting a list of what federal projects funded by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and the Inflation Reduction Act will be frozen.
