Congresswoman Brown Calls on House Republicans to Drop Conditions on Israel Aid and Support Civilians and Allies

November 2, 2023

Washington, DC – Today, House Republicans advanced legislation (H.R. 6126) placing partisan conditions on aid to Israel and blocking humanitarian assistance to Gaza. They have made emergency aid to Israel conditional upon the rescinding of IRS funding. According to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, the cuts to the IRS would increase the deficit by $12.5 billion.

Congresswoman Brown releases the following statement:

“This legislation from Speaker Johnson abandons civilians in need, abandons Israel, and sends a dangerous message to the world that the United States is not a reliable ally. This legislation is an irresponsible, illegitimate, and immoral response to the attacks on Israel and a major humanitarian crisis. We can and must support Israel’s defense and aid innocent Palestinian civilians.

“Let’s be clear, House Republicans are walking away from Israel and innocent civilians unless they get cuts to the IRS that will benefit wealthy tax cheats. The ‘offset’ they’re demanding will not cover the cost of aid, but instead will cost America more money and unconscionably endanger more innocent lives.

“Extreme MAGA Republicans are blocking humanitarian aid, compromising aid to Israel, and abandoning our allies. There is strong bipartisan support for aid to Israel and for the civilians impacted by the war. But this bill puts all aid on hold in an attempt to further unrelated partisan goals. It’s time for the Speaker and his Republican colleagues to stop playing games.”
