WASHINGTON – Rep. Shontel M. Brown (OH-11) issued the following statement after the passage of several public safety bills, which funds local police departments by investing in tools needed to prevent crime while making reforms for better training and accountability; allots resources for violence intervention initiatives and supports mental health professionals.

“Yesterday, I cast a vote to make my community safer. The package of public safety bills the House passed is a step in the right direction,” said Rep. Brown. “I am encouraged that these bills require better police training and accountability, increase resources for violence intervention initiatives, provide critical investments to bring justice to resolve cold cases, and make it easier for mental health professionals to respond to emergencies. The passage of these bills will make our communities safer for everyone.”

As part of the public safety package, the House of Representatives considered and passed the Invest to Protect Act, the VICTIM Act, the Break the Cycle of Violence Act, and the Mental Health Justice Act.
