Rep. Brown Secures $23 Million in Community Project Funding for Northeast Ohio in Appropriations Committee Bills

July 19, 2022

WASHINGTON – Rep. Shontel Brown (OH-11) announced she secured more than $23 million in Community Project Funding (CPF) across 14 requests for Fiscal Year 2023 (FY23) in spending bills approved by the House Committee on Appropriations. Rep. Brown’s requests were included in the FY23 Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies spending bill, the FY23 Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies spending bill, the FY23 Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies spending bill, and the FY23 Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies spending bill. The bills now head to the full House for a vote.

“It is my honor to fight for Ohioans in Congress, and I am proud to have secured this much-needed funding for so many critical programs and infrastructure projects,” Rep. Brown said. “These investments in key Northeast Ohio projects would create jobs, strengthen our infrastructure, and support working families. While there is work yet to be done to secure these funds, I remain committed to fighting for the federal funding our community deserves.”

This designated funding would significantly impact Ohio’s 11th Congressional District, including improving sewer infrastructure, public transportation, and roadways; supporting early education, workforce, and small business development; addressing access to affordable and nutritious food; reducing the digital divide; and building safer communities.

The projects that were funded in the FY23 Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies spending bill are:

  • Cuyahoga County, MLK Boulevard Sewer Project - $1 million
  • Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District (NEORSD), Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) Elimination Project in Garfield Heights - $2 million
  • City of Shaker Heights, Lomond/Lynnfield Sewer Remodel - $1.6 million

The projects that were funded in the FY23 Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies spending bill are:

  • Cuyahoga Community College District, Smart Manufacturing Workforce - $1.22 million
  • The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Museum Inc., Community Museum Education Programs - $1 million
  • University Hospitals Birth Safety Simulation Center - $1.14 million

The projects that were funded in the FY23 Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies spending bill are:

  • City of Cleveland, Memorial Bridges Loop Trail - $432,000
  • DigitalC, Broadband Services for Underserved Communities of Cleveland – $3 million
  • Educational Service Center of Northeast Ohio, on behalf of PRE4CLE, Cleveland Early Learning Spaces - $1.36 million
  • Greater Cleveland Food Bank Capital Expansion and Capacity Building Project - $4 million
  • Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (GCRTA), Rail Car Replacement Program - $5 million
  • University of Akron, Center for Rehabilitation of Aging Transportation Infrastructure - $1 million

The projects that were funded in the FY23 Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies spending bill are:

The projects that were funded in the FY23 Financial Services and General Government spending bill are:

  • United Black Fund of Greater Cleveland, Black Entrepreneurship Training Project - $500,000

The inclusion of these CPFs in the Appropriations Committee’s funding measures is the first step in the funding process. Rep. Brown will continue to fight for the CPFs as the appropriations measures move to consideration on the House Floor, and negotiations with the Senate.
