Rep. Brown Votes to Defend Marriage Equality
WASHINGTON – Today, Rep. Shontel M. Brown (OH-11) issued the following statement on the passage of the Respect for Marriage Act:
“Marriage is a sacred institution that should be protected and not be delegitimized. It was an honor to protect the freedom to marry the person you love regardless of sex, race, ethnicity, or national origin,” said Rep. Brown. “I voted for the Respect for Marriage Act because our job as members of Congress is to protect and defend American liberties, not restrict nor deny them.
“The bipartisan, bicameral Respect for Marriage Act will prohibit state officials from discriminating against same-sex and interracial couples and protect some of our most hard-won freedoms. Enshrining marriage equality into federal law is long overdue. I hope the Senate agrees and passes the Act quickly.”
