Brown Criticizes Devastating Supreme Court Ruling Supporting Mass Deportation of Haitians, Calls on Senate to Act

Washington, DC – Congresswoman Shontel Brown (OH-11) strongly criticizes the Supreme Court’s ruling to remove Temporary Protected Status (TPS) legal protections for Haitians in the United States. Brown calls on the Senate to join the House and pass legislation to extend TPS for Haiti.
In April, Brown voted for legislation to extend TPS for Haiti for three years, legislation that passed the Housefollowing a Democratic-led discharge petition to force a vote. Companion legislation was introduced in the Senate last week.
Congresswoman Brown releases the following statement:
“The Supreme Court’s ruling in Mullin v. Doe is an appalling setback for our country. And it is a devastating ruling for the thousands of Haitians who are here legally—living, working, and contributing to our communities.
“This is nothing but a license to feed Trump’s hateful mass deportation machine. Haitians have been denigrated by this President, Vice President and leaders in his Administration in vile and racist language. Race is a clear motivation for the Trump effort at mass deportation, because the facts simply do not warrant ending their TPS status.
“This is a disgraceful day for our country and another example of the Trump-majority on the Supreme Court choosing to be a rubber stamp, rather than a check and balance.
“Congress must act. In April, I proudly voted for legislation that passed the House to extend TPS status for Haiti. It is imperative that the Senate pass this legislation immediately. We cannot in good conscience let the Trump Administration deport thousands back to life-threatening conditions in Haiti.”
