Brown Slams GOP Budget for Slashing Medicaid, SNAP, and Head Start to Fund Billionaire Tax Breaks

Washington, DC – On behalf of her constituents, Congresswoman Shontel Brown (OH-11) voted No on the House Republican Budget. The legislation passed the House in a 217-215 vote.
“House Republicans passed one of the most shameful bills of the century: an immoral, and illogical budget that robs the poor to give to the rich,” said Congresswoman Shontel Brown. “If the funding levels established by this bill become law, millions of people will suffer just so billionaires can pocket more unneeded tax breaks. Let’s be real: Donald Trump conned the American people, and the Republicans who voted for this bill are choosing to strip health care from tens of thousands of people in Northeast Ohio so that Mar-a-Lago elites can buy another yacht. This is cruel, it's wrong, and I will continue to join my House Democratic colleagues in fighting this backwards agenda.”
The Republican Budget includes:
- $4.5 trillion in tax cuts for the wealthy
- Half the net benefit of these cuts would go to households earning more than $450,000 per year
- $880 billion in cuts to Medicaid and Affordable Care Act premium assistance
- These cuts endanger the health care coverage of more than 250,000 Ohioans in OH-11 who rely on Medicaid
- These cuts could increase premiums for 41,000 Ohioans in OH-11 who have Affordable Care Act plans
- $230 billion cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)
- These cuts endanger the nutrition benefits of more than 180,000 Ohioans in OH-11 who rely on SNAP
- $330 billion in cuts to federal education programs, including student loans, Pell Grants, Head Start, and school lunch programs
