Washington, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Shontel Brown (OH-11) condemned the Trump Administration for terminating more than $300 million in Solar for All grant funding previously awarded to Ohio.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced the termination of two federal grants awarded in June 2024 to the State of Ohio and to Cleveland-based nonprofit Growth Opportunity Partners. The funding, made possible by the Inflation Reduction Act, was poised to bring solar power, job creation, and lower utility bills to thousands of low-income households across the state.
Congresswoman Brown releases the following statement:
“The Trump Administration is once again ripping away funding from Ohio—this time slashing $312 million meant to bring clean energy, good-paying jobs, and lower utility bills to our communities. This isn’t theoretical money. Contracts were signed, plans were in motion, and both the State of Ohio and Cleveland’s own Growth Opportunity Partners were set to deliver real savings to Northeast Ohioans.
“Despite the bluster, President Trump seems intent on raising costs on Northeast Ohioans. Let’s be clear: cutting this funding means locking families into higher utility bills and taking away their chance to free up money for food, healthcare, and other essentials. This was targeted relief for those who need it most. This move isn’t just shameful – its unlawful. I’m going to work with my colleagues to ensure Ohio families get what they were promised.”
Background:
On April 22, 2024, the Biden-Harris Administration announced $7 billion in Solar for All grants to expand clean energy access for over 900,000 low-income households nationwide. Ohio received two of the largest awards in the country:
- The State of Ohio Office of Budget and Management was awarded $156,210,000 to help low- and moderate-income households achieve energy savings through residential solar deployment.
- Growth Opportunity Partners, a Cleveland-based nonprofit, received $156,210,000 to lead a multistate initiative focused on a just clean energy transition in industrial heartland communities.
