Congresswoman Brown Votes Against GOP Anti-Abortion Bills

Washington, DC – Today, Congresswoman Shontel Brown (OH-11) voted against two Republican bills that would promote a national anti-abortion agenda. Congresswoman Brown serves as a Communications Task Force Co-Chair for the Democratic Women’s Caucus and is a member of the Pro-Choice Caucus.
“Overturning Roe V. Wade wasn’t enough for the anti-choice movement. They are now advancing legislation that uses federal funds to promote anti-choice propaganda and make it harder for women to access care or get the information they need. These bills offer no meaningful childcare support for pregnant women and families, nor housing or nutrition support. They instead will keep women in the dark about their full reproductive health care options. It is especially shameful that House Republicans would pass legislation that takes federal funding away from families and gives it to anti-abortion centers. I opposed these bills and will continue to fight for abortion rights and access to reproductive health care as fundamental rights,” said Congresswoman Shontel Brown.
- H.R. 6918 would use federal dollars to fund anti-abortion centers, which are often deceptive organizations that manipulate women during their pregnancy and inhibit their ability to receive comprehensive care, while actively promoting an anti-abortion agenda. H.R. 6918 would allow states to divert federal Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) funding to these anti-abortion centers, taking away dollars meant to help families in need.
- H.R. 6914 would require colleges and universities to provide pregnant students with information designed to encourage them to carry their pregnancy to term, while not requiring any information on contraception, abortion, pregnancy loss, and other reproductive health issues, or any information about enrolling in Medicaid, WIC or related programs.
Congresswoman Brown is a cosponsor of the Women’s Health Protection Act (H.R. 12), which would re-establish abortion rights nationwide, and prevent states from enacting arbitrary and medically unnecessary barriers to care. The Women’s Health Protection Act would restore the principles of Roe V. Wade through federal law.
