For Immediate Release:

December 1, 2021

WASHINGTON – Today, Congresswoman Shontel M. Brown (OH-11) was appointed to serve on the House Agriculture Committee and the House Committee on Oversight and Reform  after her nomination from the House Democratic Steering and Policy Committee was approved by the full Democratic Caucus.

I am honored to be appointed to serve on committees that provide an opportunity to advance accountability and justice in government and use my voice to fight for working families in Northeast Ohio,” said Rep. Brown.  “On the Agriculture Committee, I look forward to building upon the legacy of my friend and predecessor, HUD Secretary Marcia L. Fudge, by improving access to food for families and people in need. I am proud to continue in the tradition, stretching back to Shirley Chisholm, of Black women representing urban districts who have served on this Committee, as Speaker Pelosi acknowledged in introducing my appointment.

“Meanwhile, serving on the Committee on Oversight and Reform means that I can work to ensure that our government is working for all people, especially minority Americans and those communities that have long been pushed aside or left behind by our country.  I am excited to put my background to work to deliver results for the people.”

The Committee on Oversight and Reform is the main investigative committee in the U.S. House of Representatives.  It has authority to investigate the subjects within the Committee’s legislative jurisdiction as well as "any matter" within the jurisdiction of the other standing House Committees.  The Agriculture Committee oversees USDA and has jurisdiction over all aspects of agriculture, forestry, nutrition, water conservation, and other agriculture-related fields.
