Rep. Brown Supports Bill to Strengthen New Moonshot Science Agency
WASHINGTON – Today, Representative Shontel M. Brown (OH-11) supported passage in the House of Representatives of the Advanced Research Projects Agency-Health (ARPA-H) Act. The bill authorizes appropriations of $500 million for five years and creates new organizational structures for the agency.
ARPA-H, the moonshot science agency proposed by President Biden and funded by Congress in the fiscal year (FY) 2022 spending bill, will accelerate innovation in health and medicine.
“Thanks to President Biden leadership, Congress created ARPA-H earlier this year to drive breakthroughs in diseases that touch virtually every family like cancer and Alzheimer’s,” said Rep. Brown. “Yet to carry out its critical mission, the agency needs long-term resources and authorities. This bill would ensure the agency can truly revolutionize how we prevent, treat, and cure diseases for years to come.”
The Administration is currently considering various locations to headquarter the new agency. On June 6, 2022, Rep. Brown led a bipartisan, bicameral group of her Ohio colleagues in sending a letter urging the Administration to consider Cleveland as the home for ARPA-H.
“In addition to long-term funding, ARPA-H needs a long-term home. That is why I recently penned a letter with my Ohio colleagues urging the President toconsider making Cleveland the base for this agency. As we continue to stand up ARPA-H, I can think of no better place than Cleveland to fulfill its mission of driving high-risk, high-reward biomedical research.”
