Rep. Brown Votes for Bill to Cap Insulin Costs

March 31, 2022

WASHINGTON Today, Rep. Shontel M. Brown (OH-11) voted for the Affordable Insulin Now Act, critical legislation to require Medicare Part D plans and commercial health insurance plans to cover insulin and cap cost-sharing at no more than $35 per month.

More than 37 million people in the United States, including one million Ohioans, have diabetes. From 2014 to 2019, the average retail price of insulin rose by 54 percent. Around one in four Americans who rely on insulin have cut back or skipped doses due to costs. Ohio residents spend anywhere from $1,200 to $20,000 annually for the most commonly used insulin medications.

“No person should have to choose between paying rent or buying the insulin they need to survive, and no person should be forced to skip or ration doses,” said Rep. Brown. “I am proud to support this critical bill that would ensure Northeast Ohioans pay no more than $35 per month for their life-saving Insulin medication.  This is an important step forward in our fight to lower health care and prescription drug costs for families.”
