Rep. Brown Votes for the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act

January 13, 2022

WASHINGTON – Today, Representative Shontel M. Brown (OH-11) supported passage in the House of Representatives of the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act, comprehensive voting rights legislation that protects the right to vote and restores the protections of the 1965 Voting Rights Act.

“I was proud to cast my vote for The Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act to defend our democracy and protect the essential right to vote,” said Rep. Brown. “With voting rights under attack across our country, now is the time to ensure every voter has free and fair access to the ballot box. Ahead of Dr. Martin Luther King Day, there has never been a more important time to honor those who came before us who secured the America we live in today. This week, President Biden delivered a powerful speech in Georgia, and I am hopeful that this stiffened some spines here in the Capitol. The Senate must do whatever it takes to pass this vital bill.”

Before Rep. Brown was sworn in to Congress, the House of Representatives passed H.R. 4, the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, to restore and strengthen the protections of the Voting Rights Act.  The House also passed H.R. 1, the For the People Act, which sets basic nationwide standards for how elections are conducted. The Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act closely mirrors key provisions in these bills and ensures safe, secure, and accessible elections for all.
